Underground Drone League is a drone sports league focused on racing FPV drone racing. The focus is on legitimizing drone racing as a sport by creating intense, spectator friendly competitions with drones that are durable, affordable, and accessible.

UDL is a drone sports league bringing drone racing to schools and the mainstream. The focus is on legitimizing drone racing as a sport by creating intense, spectator friendly competitions with drones that are durable, affordable, and accessible.

If you are a pilot, you can participate by finding local qualifying races and attending them. By participating in these races, you'll get season points which will qualify you for your region's championship race. If you do well there, you'll have the opportunity to compete at the national championship!
We are working on a tool to help you find UDL races more easily in the future. But we will also have a list of all regions and participating chapters for this upcoming season soon! Stay tuned.
The first step is to already be hosting some races. The second step is to reach out to me (find the admin team in the Facebook group)! Your club does not have to be large to participate in UDL, nor does it have to be old! We do not have any minimum requirements for club age or participating pilots. In fact, the purpose of the league format is to GROW chapters, so small and young chapters are extremely welcome!
Instead, the basis for participating has more to do with whether your geographic location can support a regional championship. If there are other clubs within driving distance of you, you almost certainly will be able to have your club participate in UDL. If there aren't any other active clubs within driving distance, it will be worthwhile to help foster the growth of other clubs near you. I've found that there's interest in drone racing across the nation; all it takes is someone to create a spark to ignite that interest into a club!
If you have a local club near you, you can ask the race director to reach out to me to see about participating. This can be a very easy way to get going with UDL, especially if they are already having indoor races. If your club isn't doing any indoor racing, it may because they don't have the support they need to do it. In this case, you could be the solution!
If a race director has no interest in indoor racing, they will most likely still fully support your decision to start a club of your own or to act as an extension of what they are doing. Either way, you may get permission to use some club supplies to host races, such as a lap timer, which can be extremely helpful. Ultimately, do what you can to support your local clubs and they will most likely support you back! That can go a long way for starting something new.
We are huge supporters of starting your own club and facilitating racing in your own area. We can help you do it as well. However, if there are clubs near you, within maybe a two hour's drive or so, it's important to be in contact with them and have good relations. Their support will go a long way in having a successful club and building up the community.
Assuming you can start a club and maintain good relations with your community, giving pilots more opportunity to attend races is only a good thing, at least as long as you're coordinating with other race directors who might share a pilot pool.
Feel free to reach out with any questions about how you can be successful in this journey. We love to help and coach aspiring race directors through this process. Eventually, we plan and hope to have even more resources for you to make it easier but for now, we can at least talk!
The best way to participate is to get your local club and other clubs near you to participate together so that your region can host its own championship. This should definitely be your priority and first course of action.
If this isn't a realistic possibility for the current or upcoming season, we are working on other potential opportunities for qualifying for the national championship.
Join the UDL Facebook Group and feel free to either make a post there or DM one of the members of the admin team.
UDL now offers two different classes! Previously, UDL has been known solely for its Igniter class, but now also offers the extremely popular Shrieker class!

The highest performance indoor racing on the planet. A small ruleset emphasizes the importance of building the best drone possible and encourages the fastest flying imaginable. Of course, the pilots themselves have to be capable and prepared to handle such machines...

A more strict ruleset deemphasizes the importance of your build and places the podium positions purely as a result of pilot skill. Though a little slower, you'll find closer, more intense races filled with LEDs. With Igniters, it's all about momentum, good lines, and consistency.

No need to be overwhelmed on what to build, part compatibility, or your tune. Spec racing makes it easier than ever to get started. Additionally, the flight characteristics are designed to get anyone flying competently as quickly as possible.
Igniters are the most affordable form of FPV drone racing on the planet, achieved by utilizing low cost parts and prioritizing durable builds that can sustain years of crashes.
The minimum weight limit allow for much more lax build requirements. You don't need to subject yourself to micro soldering, frame shaving, or various other methods of keeping weight down to be competitive.
Igniter races are much closer than Shriekers and wins come from the nuances of better flight lines. You're much more likely to find yourself hot on the heels of another pilot and the LEDs make you acutely aware of everyone's position.
Several of the fastest growing drone racing clubs in America attribute their growth to the Igniter class. Due to spectator appeal, media presence, and the above listed benefits, Igniters make growing your club easier than ever.
While UDL does offer multiple classes of drone racing, the main focus is on spec and stock racing which provides various pilot benefits

Historically the most popular form of drone racing, open class places a very limited ruleset on the drones participating. Although there are many downsides with this form of racing that make it far from ideal for both beginners and professionals, it is the only way a pilot can compete with nearly no restrictions. Because of this, UDL has the Shrieker Class, which is a more open format we offer on the side to test pilots who desire the raw competition.
Spec racing is similar to open class but has a more strict ruleset. This offers more guidance to beginners without being any less competitive. The difference is that the stricter rules allow for the intentional creation of a racing environment conducive towards our goals and mission statement. In UDL, this is our Igniter Class and the main focus of what we do. It's how we achieve accessible, competitive, growth focused racing.
Stock racing is the strictest form of racing requiring an exact build. This makes it less affordable than spec racing, though more affordable than open class. Having exact builds eliminates the drone as a variable making it the truest test of piloting skill, however, potential supply chain issues make this currently impractical at scale. Instead this is something UDL aims to bring just to the professional level of racing.
